Gatherings
“Since joining the group I’ve met some brilliant people who
I can relate to in many ways. I feel I’ve begun a new journey, a
positive confidence boosting experience.”
young person, former company member
After
attending at least three taster drama workshops the young people can
join Street Alive’s Theatre for Life programme. The first stage,
Contact Group, is a twelve-week course specialising in theatre skills,
improvisation and forum theatre. During the workshops the young people
share their stories and experiences and create a short piece of Forum
Theatre which tells a story that the group feels should be told to an
audience. The group then spends the final weeks of the course touring
to schools, youth centres and hostels to perform the plays. The young
people are provided with travel costs and food expenses throughout the
Theatre for Life course. Also, the young people who have joined the
company are given the opportunity to attend ‘Emergency First Aid
in the Workplace’ training, which gives them an appointed person
status and is valid for three years.
Theatre for Life is an Open College Network (London Region) accredited
course. Our organisation was awarded a LOCN centre of Excellence in
2004. If you would like to find out how to enrol for the next Theatre
for Life, please call us on 020 3242 0088.
Workshop Leadership and Stage Management
After the Contact Group the young people can progress to our Workshop Leadership course, followed by Stage Management course (both OCN accredited). Workshop Leadership runs for two weeks and Stage Management for three. Both are delivered by current working professionals who give the young people the opportunity to increase their skills base and develop their interest further in the performing arts. After completing Workshop Leadership and Stage Management those young people who want to increase their involvement will be introduced to the Main Company. This is the most intense level of involvement, offering company training and rehearsals and an opportunity to tour pieces of interactive theatre. From this group of young people Streets Alive aim to establish a permanent theatre ensemble who may wish to remain with Streets Alive, form their own company or seek work in the arts.
ON
TRACK is a technical theatre training programme produced by Streets
Alive Theatre Company for homeless or ex-homeless young people. The
pilot ON TRACK programme took place in January and February 2007 at the
London Bubble theatre in London and it is hoped that the outcomes from
this will enable the development of future programmes modelled on it.
ON TRACK's objective is to inform participants of professional practice
and employment in the field of technical theatre through an accredited
practical course in stage design, sound systems and lighting.
Transition Programme is an OCN initiative with the aim of making the transition into Further/Higher Education easier for learners from disadvantaged backgrounds. We are currently piloting our accredited two-part Transition Programme. We have run both of the two parts of the programme, called Community Professional Development and Learning Links - Career Education and Management. The first part has been designed for arts professionals and tutors who work in the FE sector who would like to work with Community or Voluntary sector learners. The second part, Learning Links - Career Education and Management is designed for Community and Voluntary learners to aid their transition into the formal Further Education environments. Learning Links- Career Education and Management carries a NOCN (National Open College Network) Qualification.
Those of our young people looking into continuing with their education or attending college can meet up in our bi-weekly study group to gain information on accredited and non-accredited courses, assistance with applications or to exchange experiences with those who have already accessed further education.
Gatherings
are an opportunity for anyone who has been involved with the company,
including past and present members of the board, staff, young people
and freelancers, to meet up and discuss issues relevant to the
company’s progression. It gives the young people an opportunity
to feed their creative ideas into the development of Streets Alive.
They are also an opportunity to celebrate and recognise achievement.
The gatherings consist of various interactive activities, such as the
meeting of the youth board, accredited workshops and discussions of the
business plans and so on. The gatherings take place four to five times
a year.
